OBSERVING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY AS OBAMA PREPARES FOR INAUGURATION

Two months after the election of the first black president of the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day consequentially holds a multifaceted connotation in 2009. President Elect Barack Obama will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, opportunely one day after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the celebration of one of history’s most prominent figures who helped make electing a black president possible.

Gwynedd-Mercy College will observe this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for three days:  Monday, Jan. 19 through Wednesday, Jan. 21. Community members are welcome to join students during a community service day in which service projects will be completed to benefit local organizations. The movie Citizen King, a depiction of Dr. King and how his movement changed the United States, will be shown continuously during the community service. The service day begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. in the Waldron Board Room located on campus.

On Monday night, Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m., a candlelight procession will lead from Rotelle Lounge in The Griffin Complex to the Bell Tower on campus, and then Gustav Martin, where an informal discussion about the influence Dr. King had on the evolution of civil rights will take place.

TVs across campus will be tuned to the Inauguration on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, a panel discussion titled “Is This the Mountaintop?” will be held in Merck Auditorium from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will revolve around the implications of the United States’ first black president.

Events are co-sponsored by Black Student Union, Campus Ministry, Mercy 4 Justice, Mercy Works, Lourdes Library and the Mission and Values Committee.

SURPRISE ENDING TO GMC SPIRIT RALLY

Gwynedd-Mercy College’s men’s soccer team helped grant a birthday wish to local boy Luke Ronco, who the team “adopted” in August 2008 through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Luke, 9 years old, has been battling a brain tumor for six years. He attends GMC soccer games and practices, and likes to do the coin toss before the games.

When asked how he wanted to celebrate his upcoming birthday, Luke said “with my soccer team.”

Men’s soccer coach Dave Bontempo heard that Luke collects Pez dispensers and asked his son and daughter to send the message out on the Facebook social network. The result was an outpouring of responses, doubling Luke’s collection to be over 1,000 Pez dispensers. Luke was introduced at a spirit rally at Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday, Dec. 3 and presented with the items, including a book autographed by Pat Croce, a T-shirt and hat autographed by St. Joe’s University coach Phil Martelli, and a poster autographed by Penn State University’s basketball team.
